Whilst legislative compliance, financial benefits and more efficient process management may drive organisations to thinking about their waste management systems, the Environmental benefits of such actions are obviously significant and the PHS Wasteteam will endeavour to highlight these from initial proposals through to ongoing review reporting.
General facts and figures relating to waste management and recycling:
- 1 tonne of paper recycled saves 17 trees
- 200kg of paper recycled saves 1 cubic metre of landfill
- In 2005 UK businesses alone are estimated to have produced over 80 million tonnes of waste. Only 45% of this waste was recycled, with over 35 million tonnes of it going straight into landfill!
- Currently only 7% of the UK’s annual 3 million tonnes of plastic waste is recycled.
- Recycling just 2 glass bottles saves enough energy to boil a full kettle.
- Making 1 aluminium can from raw materials uses the same amount of energy needed to recycle 20.
